Durban Port to get R6.5-billion infrastructure injection

South African parastatal, Transnet will invest R6.5-billion in upgrading the Port of Durban in the next five years. This is part of Transnet’s R93-billion capital programme.

Transnet's group chief executive for capital projects, Moira Moses, said that they would buy Salisbury Island and convert it into another container terminal. "Salisbury Island is being used by the navy. We will keep the navy at the foot of the area and convert the property into a container terminal and that will add 700 000 twenty-foot equivalent units (of capacity), and we will upgrade some of the navy facilities," said Moses.

Other projects in Durban include extending and upgrading the berths at Island View to be completed next year.

Berths at Maydon Wharf will also be upgraded, that construction is expected to start in August this year.

There are also road construction projects to improve access via Bayhead and building of a link road to provide alternative access to the western side of the port.

A permanent sand bypass system also has to be built, with the final designs expected to be done by June.
