Mission
The mission of KwaDukuza Municipality is to achieve the highest economic status through:
• Delivering local economic development
• Delivering a high standard of essential services
• Encouraging public participation
• Overcoming debt and achieving cost recovery on services provided
Location
The KwaDukuza Local Municipality is one of four local municipalities that make up the iLembe District Municipality. The municipal area stretches from the uThongathi River in the south to just across the Zinkwazi River in the north, and occupies a coastal and inland area of 50km long and 14km wide. It also sits on the important corridor between eThekwini and Richards Bay,
which has been identified as one of the primary development corridors that will drive economic growth in KwaZulu- Natal. The KwaDukuza town (formerly Stanger) forms the principal town of KwaDukuza Local Municipality but the beach towns of Ballito and Salt Rock are also very popular.
Economic activity
The dominant land-use outside of the urban areas of the KwaDukuza Municipality is sugarcane plantations interspersed along the coast and in some inland areas with forestry plantations. The only major traditional settlement within the area is located in the north-west portion of the municipal area. However, with the recent construction of the King Shaka International Airport and Dube TradePort, this area is set to grow.
The region boasts a variety of tourist attractions and is ready to welcome visitors year round. The municipality also co-organises two festivals, the Prawn & Jazz Festival and the Mr Price Pro Ballito Festival. There have been a
number of golf-course and estate developments in the region in recent years.
CBD regeneration
Unlike some of the affluent areas along the Dolphin Coast, KwaDukuza town CBD has experienced decay over a number of years and the municipality has recognised that this trend needs to be reversed. The focus of regeneration activities will include examining and improving various aspects of the CBD including available transport and current transport routes, public spaces, infrastructure, municipal services, availability of retail and tourist facilities and the general integration and appeal of the area. The regeneration plans have created a number of opportunities for potential investors.
